African Democratic Congress chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has argued that opposition supporters who back Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election may inadvertently strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term, insisting that only a united opposition can successfully challenge the incumbent.
A prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has stated that votes cast for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election could ultimately work in favour of President Bola Tinubu.
Okonkwo made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV, where he stressed the importance of opposition unity ahead of the next general election.
According to him, the opposition cannot afford to remain divided if it hopes to mount a successful challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu.
He argued that the emergence of multiple opposition candidates would split votes that could otherwise be consolidated behind a single platform, thereby improving Tinubu’s chances of re-election.
Okonkwo maintained that whether intentionally or indirectly, any political move that divides opposition support would benefit the incumbent president.
The former Labour Party spokesperson also criticized Obi’s reported decision to pull out of coalition discussions within the ADC, alleging that the former presidential candidate was unwilling to participate in a competitive primary election process.
According to Okonkwo, Obi voluntarily joined the ADC coalition discussions but later withdrew before the conclusion of the process.
He questioned Obi’s reluctance to contest a primary, arguing that anyone seeking to lead Nigeria should be prepared to face political competition and challenges.
Okonkwo further claimed that Senator Victor Umeh had previously advocated a political alliance between the South-East and northern political interests as a strategic pathway to securing the presidency for the region.
He alleged that Umeh informed him that Obi was not receptive to such political advice and preferred to pursue his own approach.
The ADC chieftain said opposition supporters should carefully consider the implications of their voting decisions ahead of the 2027 election.
He warned that backing Obi outside a broader opposition coalition could fragment anti-government votes and make it easier for Tinubu to retain power.
According to Okonkwo, a united opposition remains the most viable option for those seeking political change in the country.
His comments add to the ongoing debate surrounding opposition realignments, coalition-building efforts, and strategies being considered by political actors ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The remarks also reflect continuing discussions about the future role of Peter Obi within Nigeria’s opposition landscape and the possibility of a unified front against the ruling APC.
