Aviation authorities launch investigation into possible security breaches after restricted airport zones were allegedly accessed without proper passenger clearance.
The Federal Government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into security procedures at Yola Airport following the emergence of viral videos showing the wife of former Adamawa North Senator, Ishaku Abbo, repeatedly gaining access to restricted operational areas of the airport.
The directive was issued by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, after footage surfaced online showing Mrs. Patience Abbo entering airside sections of the airport reserved exclusively for screened passengers, aviation personnel, and individuals with authorised clearance.
According to reports, the minister demanded explanations from airport security officials after the initial incident came to public attention, prompting concerns over compliance with established aviation security regulations.
Security personnel at the airport reportedly explained that Mrs. Abbo informed Aviation Security officers that she was travelling alongside her husband, leading officials to permit her passage through restricted access points.
However, airport authorities later stated that officers only discovered she was not a passenger after she was seen returning alone from the aircraft area back to the terminal building.
The controversy intensified after a second video emerged showing Mrs. Abbo once again accompanying the former senator across the airport tarmac. In the footage, she was seen wheeling a suitcase toward an aircraft while dressed in a brown abaya, raising fresh concerns that the incident was not an isolated occurrence.
The latest development has prompted aviation authorities to investigate whether airport security personnel failed to enforce access-control regulations or deliberately overlooked established procedures.
Officials are expected to examine the actions of Aviation Security officers on duty during both incidents and determine whether negligence, compromise, or procedural violations occurred.
The probe will also assess reports that a videographer was granted access to the tarmac to record aircraft activities, a development aviation stakeholders have described as another potential breach of airport security protocols.
Industry experts have questioned why security officers allegedly relied on verbal claims rather than verifying travel documents, including boarding passes, before granting access to sensitive operational zones.
Under the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, airport aprons, tarmacs, and other operational areas are designated Security Restricted Areas and may only be accessed by authorised personnel or properly screened passengers with valid travel credentials.
Aviation observers have also linked the incident to what they describe as a persistent “VIP culture” within some Nigerian airports, where influential individuals and their associates are allegedly allowed to bypass security procedures ordinarily applied to other passengers.
Speaking previously on airport safety concerns, aviation security expert Abubakar Manir warned that unauthorised civilian access to operational aircraft environments poses serious risks, particularly around aircraft with active engines and propeller systems.
Authorities say the ongoing investigation will seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incidents and recommend measures to strengthen compliance with aviation security standards across the country.
Efforts to obtain comments from former Senator Ishaku Abbo regarding the incident were reportedly unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
