Community condemns killing of midwifery student as police intensify investigation in Obowo LGA.
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Achumba, in Umuadara Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State.
Police spokesperson DSP Henry Okoye disclosed that the suspects, identified as Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel Onyekachi, were apprehended by operatives attached to the Obowo Divisional Headquarters following intelligence-led investigations carried out in collaboration with community stakeholders.
According to the police, 32-year-old Onyema Okonkwo allegedly confessed to raping and killing the victim in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Investigators said the suspect also implicated 25-year-old Emmanuel Onyekachi as an accomplice, alleging that both men became involved after the victim reportedly recognised them.
The deceased, Wendy Achumba, was a student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School and was reportedly undergoing post-basic training in midwifery before the tragic incident.
Police authorities confirmed that both suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The incident has sparked outrage within the community, with residents and traditional leaders publicly condemning the killing.
The traditional ruler of Umuadara Umulogho, Patrick Uwalaka, distanced the community from the crime and insisted that the area remains peaceful and law-abiding.
Speaking during a gathering at the village square, the monarch called on anyone with relevant information to cooperate with investigators and support efforts to ensure justice for the victim.
He also advocated for traditional sanctions against individuals found responsible for the crime.
Residents of the community reportedly assembled to denounce the incident, describing the killing as shocking and unacceptable.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Audu Bosso, assured the public that the case would be handled professionally and transparently.
He stated that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
The President of Umulogho Youths, Chidiebere Iweajunwa, also commended local youths for assisting security operatives during the investigation and arrest process.
He called for swift prosecution of the suspects and justice for the late nursing student.
The case has renewed conversations around gender-based violence, campus safety, and community security, with residents demanding stronger measures to protect women and students across the state.
