AAC presidential candidate pledges sweeping labour and housing reforms ahead of the 2027 elections, targeting poverty, unemployment, and workers’ welfare.
Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has announced ambitious plans to introduce a ₦500,000 minimum wage and construct one million public housing units across Nigeria if elected president in 2027.
Sowore disclosed the proposals in a series of statements shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, May 28, 2026, where he outlined what he described as a comprehensive reform agenda aimed at improving workers’ welfare and addressing Nigeria’s housing crisis.
According to the AAC candidate, his administration would dismantle exploitative labour practices and reform housing policies that he said have left millions of Nigerians trapped in poverty and homelessness.
Sowore stated that his government would revive mass public housing schemes but without the social and economic segregation often associated with government housing projects.
He explained that the proposed estates would operate as mixed-income communities equipped with modern infrastructure and social amenities, including schools, healthcare centres, malls, theatres, playgrounds, green areas, transportation systems, and recreational facilities.
The activist accused Nigeria’s political elite of diverting public resources into luxury lifestyles while ordinary citizens struggle with poor living conditions and economic hardship.
According to him, his administration would prioritise affordable, decent, and environmentally sustainable housing for workers, students, families, and vulnerable communities.
On labour reforms, Sowore vowed to abolish casualisation and exploitative contract staffing systems, describing them as unfair practices that deny workers dignity, stability, and adequate welfare.
He argued that Nigerian workers deserve better salaries, healthcare, pensions, humane working conditions, and stronger job security protections.
The AAC candidate further maintained that a ₦500,000 national minimum wage is realistic considering Nigeria’s current economic challenges and rising cost of living.
He added that workers in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, policing, and the military deserve additional allowances and improved compensation reflecting the risks and responsibilities associated with their jobs.
Sowore said his broader objective is to restore dignity to labour, reduce economic inequality, and create a fairer system that prioritises the welfare and empowerment of ordinary Nigerians.
The proposals form part of his emerging campaign agenda ahead of the 2027 presidential election as political parties and aspirants intensify preparations for the next electoral cycle.
