A faction of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has issued a stinging rebuke to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing his government of deepening poverty, destroying federalism, and betraying the electoral promise of “Renewed Hope.”
In a scathing midterm report signed by Oba Oladipo Olaitan and Justice Faloye, the group stated that Tinubu’s two-year leadership has plunged Nigeria into an unprecedented nightmare marked by economic collapse, institutional decay, and mass suffering.
According to Afenifere, “every human development and socio-political index has regressed” under Tinubu’s watch. The group alleged that instead of owning up to its “wrong policy choices and wasteful spending,” the administration has resorted to “massive propaganda” and blame games, refusing to acknowledge the pain ordinary Nigerians face daily.
“The Tinubu Economic Reforms have become Tinubu Economic Deforms,” the report reads, highlighting key missteps such as the hasty removal of fuel subsidies, the unplanned floating of the Naira, and an overall lack of cushioning strategies to protect citizens from the economic shockwaves.
Afenifere further condemned the federal government’s profligacy and elitism, citing examples such as the acquisition of a new presidential jet, luxury vehicles for lawmakers, and bloated constituency project allocations—while citizens are told to tighten their belts.
The group also criticized the administration for failing to implement the Oronsaye Report on reducing the cost of governance and instead creating new cost centers for allies and loyalists. The tone of governance, they said, is “one of waste and excess,” disconnected from the reality of the common man.
On Governance and Federalism
Afenifere accused President Tinubu of undermining democratic structures and centralizing power, effectively “destructuring” Nigeria’s federal system rather than restructuring it. The group claimed the government is neutralizing the roles of the judiciary and legislature, weakening state and local governments, and moving toward a one-party authoritarian state.
“The government has shown intolerance for peaceful protests, and there’s been increased harassment of dissenting voices—from student unions to labor groups,” the statement said. “Opposition politicians are defecting en masse under pressure, while pro-government elements are being installed in key electoral bodies like INEC.”
Warning and Call to Action
In its closing remarks, Afenifere described the Tinubu administration as more focused on the 2027 elections than actual governance or service delivery.
“This midterm report is our patriotic duty,” Afenifere stated, “to ensure the voices of millions of hungry, jobless, and disappointed Nigerians are not drowned by government spin doctors.”
The group called on President Tinubu to reflect and recalibrate his policies for the sake of Nigeria and its citizens.
“No amount of media propaganda will erase the visible hunger and hardship in the land,” the report concluded.
