A suspected outbreak of diarrhea has struck Government Girls Senior and Junior Secondary School, Kawo in Kaduna State, leaving 81 students ill, with 15 requiring hospitalization.
The incident was confirmed by the Kaduna State Ministry of Health on Friday, following an on-site investigation by the State Rapid Response Team, led by the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Jeremiah Diako.
According to Dr. Diako, most of the affected students were between the ages of 16 and 17.
“All students who were hospitalised have now been treated and discharged,” he stated, adding that the cases were swiftly managed at the General Hospital, Kawo.
Urgent Health Measures Underway
In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has outlined a proactive action plan to prevent similar public health concerns in the future. The measures include:
- Strengthening disease reporting mechanisms in schools
- Establishing school-based surveillance systems
- Standardising emergency case referral procedures
- Training on food safety and waste management
- Enhancing local outbreak preparedness and response
Officials emphasized that these interventions are vital to safeguarding the health and well-being of students and ensuring a prompt response to any future health threats.
