Teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory have commenced an indefinite strike action, forcing the closure of public primary and secondary schools across Abuja.
The industrial action follows unresolved disputes with the FCT Administration, particularly over unpaid arrears, outstanding allowances, and unfulfilled agreements affecting teachers’ welfare. Union leaders said the decision to down tools was reached after several failed negotiations with authorities.
As a result of the strike, school premises were deserted, leaving thousands of pupils and students stranded at home. Parents have expressed frustration over the disruption of the academic calendar, while some worry about the long-term impact on learning outcomes if the strike lingers.
The teachers, however, insist the action is a last resort, stressing that they will not return to classrooms until concrete commitments are made to address their demands. They argue that improved welfare is essential for quality education delivery in the nation’s capital.
So far, the FCT Administration has appealed for calm and dialogue, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to resolve the impasse and reopen schools as soon as possible.
