The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has raised serious alarm over the manner in which the recently passed Tax Reform Acts were enacted, asserting that the process casts doubt on the integrity, transparency, and credibility of Nigeria’s lawmaking system. In a strongly worded statement signed by NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association stressed that the legislative process must be “beyond suspicion” in order to preserve public confidence and the constitutional order.
The NBA’s statement emphasized that the controversies surrounding the enactment of the Tax Reform Acts strike at the very heart of constitutional governance and democratic principles. It warned that continuing with the implementation of laws perceived to have procedural irregularities could destabilize the business environment, erode investor confidence, and create legal uncertainty for individuals and institutions.
In response, the NBA has called on relevant authorities to immediately suspend all plans for implementation of the Tax Reform Acts until a comprehensive and transparent review is conducted. The association argued that such a step is necessary to safeguard the rule of law, restore public trust, and ensure that Nigeria’s legislative processes remain transparent and accountable.
