Lawmakers in the Nigerian Senate have raised concerns over what they described as a serious shortage of funds, warning that the situation is hindering legislative duties and effective oversight.
During plenary deliberations, several senators lamented that inadequate budgetary releases have made it difficult for committees to carry out investigations, oversight visits, and constituency-related engagements. They noted that the legislature cannot function optimally when financial support falls short of operational needs.
The senators stressed that beyond lawmaking, the National Assembly plays a critical role in monitoring government agencies and ensuring accountability—responsibilities that require adequate funding. Some lawmakers cautioned that prolonged financial strain could weaken democratic processes and governance standards.
Calls were made for improved funding mechanisms and timely releases, with senators urging relevant authorities to prioritise the financial health of the legislature in order to strengthen democracy and national development.
