Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, has issued a powerful warning on the grave dangers of allowing civilian governance to morph into what he describes as a form of dictatorship, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and protect democratic institutions. Adegboruwa’s commentary reflects deep concerns that unchecked executive power, erosion of constitutional order, and political maneuvers that centralize authority could undermine the very foundations of the country’s democracy.

    SAN Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa

In his piece, Adegboruwa traces Nigeria’s political trajectory since the return to civilian rule in 1999, noting that the military may have left formal power, but its influence persists in politics, governance, policy, and even economic control, which he argues blurs the line between democratic governance and authoritarian control. He highlights recent controversial state actions — including unilateral federal interventions in state affairs — as symptomatic of a dangerous drift toward centralized, unaccountable power that threatens civil liberties, the rule of law, and the balance of powers.

The SAN urges a renewed commitment to democratic norms, constitutionalism, and accountability, stressing that once executive overreach becomes normalized, the risk of “legalized dictatorship” rises sharply, eroding trust in democratic institutions and diminishing citizens’ rights. Adegboruwa’s call to action is a stark reminder of the fragility of democratic gains and the need for constant civic engagement to safeguard freedom.
