The Kano Hisbah Board has officially called off the controversial court-ordered wedding between well-known TikTok personalities Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda.
This decision comes after a magistrate court had earlier directed Hisbah to facilitate the marriage within 60 days, warning that any failure to comply would amount to contempt of court. The initial order followed the pair’s arrest by the Kano State Censorship Board over viral videos deemed “immoral and demeaning,” which allegedly violated state laws against obscene or sexually suggestive content.
According to Punch, Hisbah’s Director-General, Abba Sufi, revealed that investigations uncovered that Wushirya’s declaration of love for Yar Guda was fabricated.
“Mai Wushirya told us that he lied to the court that he and Yar Guda were in love to evade prosecution,” Sufi disclosed.
“With this development, we have cancelled the wedding and referred the matter back to the judge who issued the order for appropriate action.”
The court’s earlier directive mandating the duo to marry sparked widespread outrage, with many Nigerians describing it as an infringement on individual freedom and human rights.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also condemned the ruling, branding it “unconstitutional” and reiterating that marriage is a voluntary union that cannot be legally imposed on anyone.
The case has since reignited national debate over religious enforcement, freedom of expression, and the role of morality laws in a democratic society, especially concerning the growing influence of social media personalities in conservative regions.
