As Nigeria marks Democracy Day on May 29, 2025, the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the apex socio-cultural body for the Niger Delta region, has commended the Governors of the South-South states for their impressive achievements in governance and development.
In a Democracy Day message signed by the National Chairman of PANDEF, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, OON, the forum expressed heartfelt appreciation for the visionary leadership and commitment of the governors in transforming the region. Specifically, accolades were extended to Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Governor Prince Bassey Otu of Cross River, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Governor Similayi Fubara of Rivers, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa, and Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State.
PANDEF highlighted remarkable efforts in infrastructural growth, such as road construction, bridge expansion, urban renewal, agricultural investment, and the establishment of strategic port facilities. These developments, according to the forum, are “significantly enhancing connectivity, fostering regional integration, and laying the groundwork for sustained economic prosperity.”
The statement also acknowledged strong strides in social welfare—particularly in education, healthcare, and civil service reform—emphasizing that these improvements are already uplifting the quality of life for many residents in the region.
However, PANDEF warned that now is not the time to become complacent. “There is still more to be done,” the forum noted, urging South-South governors to deepen cooperation through mechanisms such as the BRACED Commission and joint state initiatives to build a more unified economic front.
Furthermore, PANDEF called on the people of the region—traditional rulers, elders, youth, and community stakeholders—to rally behind their governors with support, collaboration, and prayers. This, the statement said, is crucial for sustaining the development momentum and ensuring peace.
While addressing current political instability, particularly in Rivers State, PANDEF expressed concern over “democratic erosion” but reaffirmed its unwavering stand for peace, unity, and resolution. “We know Rivers State will be free again,” the forum stated confidently, pledging to continue mobilizing efforts toward peace and reconciliation.
“Happy Democracy Day to all,” the message concluded. “Let us stay hopeful and committed to a brighter future for the Niger Delta.”
