The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has joined the nation in mourning the passing of Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh, OFR, a man whose life was defined by service, humility, and unwavering patriotism. In his condolence message, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono, OON, described Chief Ogbeh with moving words that capture both his public achievements and his personal warmth.
“I am profoundly saddened by the sudden passing of my ‘Uncle,’ boss, mentor, guardian, and leader,” Echono wrote, adding that Chief Ogbeh’s departure leaves “a void that will be deeply felt by many, particularly the Idoma nation, as he was a paragon of visionary leadership and an unwavering advocate for the progress of our beloved country.”
Chief Ogbeh’s name is inseparable from the story of Nigeria’s political development. Over the years, he served as Minister of Communication, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum. In all these roles, he consistently embodied integrity, courage, and excellence. As Echono emphasized, “His commitment to excellence and his dedication to public service have not only shaped policies but have also inspired generations of Nigerian patriots to strive for greatness and contribute positively to the nation.”
The Executive Secretary’s tribute went beyond official achievements to highlight Chief Ogbeh’s personal touch. Reflecting on his last encounter with him just two weeks before his death, Echono noted that although the discussion revolved around serious national issues, “interwoven between the serious issues discussed were banters, jokes, reminiscences, and the usual fatherly advice. Those are fond memories that will linger.”
Chief Ogbeh’s legacy, as described by Echono, is one of compassion, resilience, and integrity. “He will be remembered not just as a leader but as a guiding light for many who aspire to follow in his footsteps,” he said. Quoting President Muhammadu Buhari’s own words about Ogbeh, Echono recalled: “I will give you a man with the integrity of Audu Ogbeh as your Minister.” Those words, he noted, remain a testament to the late statesman’s character and values.
In closing, Echono offered prayers for comfort and peace: “As people of faith, we accept this latest challenge. We renew our trust in God, that He will console and comfort us all. May his soul rest in eternal peace, Amen.”
