The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians regarding the use of specific Dove-branded soaps and deodorants, citing serious health concerns.
According to Public Alert No. 018/2025, released earlier this week, four variants of Dove cosmetic products have been found to contain 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde (BMHCA)—a chemical banned in the European Union due to its harmful effects on reproductive health, including potential risks to unborn children and skin sensitisation.

NAFDAC confirmed that these products are not registered in its regulatory database and are therefore considered unauthorised for sale or distribution within Nigeria.
The agency also reminded the public that importation of soaps remains prohibited under Nigeria’s import restriction laws, and that cosmetic products such as these are ineligible for foreign exchange access through official channels.
“Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are urged to exercise extreme caution and vigilance across the supply chain,” the alert stated.
“Anyone in possession of the affected products should discontinue use or sale immediately and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.”
NAFDAC further encouraged healthcare professionals and the public to report any adverse reactions via its electronic reporting platform.
