The U.S. State of Georgia has conferred Honorary Citizenship and Goodwill Ambassador status on Nnamdi Okwu Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in a move that has stirred conversations far beyond American borders.
The recognition was formalised through an official proclamation signed by Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, describing Kanu as an outstanding individual deserving of honour and international goodwill. The proclamation further states that he should be accorded due courtesies associated with the honorary status whenever applicable.
The certificate was formally received on Kanu’s behalf by Uche Ajulu-Okeke, a former Nigerian ambassador, during a presentation ceremony held in Georgia.
This development comes at a time when Kanu remains in detention in Nigeria, following his conviction on terrorism-related charges—charges he has consistently denied and is currently contesting through legal channels. The honorary citizenship, while symbolic and non-binding in legal terms, has reignited international attention on his case and the broader debate surrounding self-determination, human rights, and political dissent.
