Nigeria’s Federal Government, acting on the approval of President Bola Tinubu, has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The declaration follows a seven‑day national mourning period that commenced on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, Minister of Interior, conveyed the decision via a statement issued by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
The day is designated for Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s contributions to national unity, integrity, and public service, and to promote values of peace, patriotism, and cohesion – ideals he championed.
In addition to the federal declaration, the North‑West Governors’ Forum—which includes Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states—has jointly recognized the day statewide to allow citizens to observe the period of mourning .
From Sunday, July 13 through Saturday, July 19, national flags are to fly at half‑mast nationwide .
