A coalition of climate-conscious members within the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the platform of the APC Climate Change Network (ACCN), has formally declared its support for Senator Tanko Al-Makura as the next National Chairman of the APC, following the resignation of Dr. Umar Ganduje last week.
The ACCN, established in 2024 to champion climate literacy and facilitate a green energy transition within the party, announced its endorsement through a press statement co-signed by Citizen Greg Odogwu (Coordinator) and Barr. John Akpan (Legal Officer). The group cited Al-Makura’s exemplary record in sustainable development and inclusive governance as the driving factors behind its support.
“This endorsement reflects Senator Al-Makura’s track record as a former governor who prioritized green infrastructure development in Nasarawa State and his unwavering commitment to inclusive governance,” the statement read.
Notably, Al-Makura is lauded for his advocacy for persons with disabilities (PWDs), being himself a person living with a hearing impairment. The ACCN emphasized that his inclusive governance style aligns directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly in advancing climate justice and equity.
Describing itself as a grassroots-driven climate advocacy network, the ACCN comprises APC members at ward, local government, and state levels who are dedicated to promoting awareness and action on climate issues across the party structure.
“As climate change champions focused on positioning APC as the most climate-friendly political party in Africa, we know firsthand what it will take to green our great party,” the statement added. “An Al-Makura chairmanship represents a turning point.”
The group expressed confidence that Senator Al-Makura’s leadership would lead to the establishment of Climate Desks in APC offices nationwide, institutionalizing climate policy dialogue between the party and government.
“This will signal the APC’s seriousness about climate action and position us for global relevance in issues of climate change, circular economy, and sustainable development. It will also resonate with an electorate that increasingly prioritizes environmental responsibility.”
The ACCN reaffirmed its commitment to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s climate and energy transition agenda, asserting that Al-Makura’s emergence as National Chairman would advance a just and inclusive green transition across the party and the country
