In a major leap toward bridging Nigeria’s digital divide, Globacom, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and Huawei Nigerian Enterprises, has launched a groundbreaking pilot project to bring digital services to underserved communities. The first rollout took place on Wednesday in Isuanin Kura, Ibwa 2, Gwagwalada, a remote village on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry, aims to provide digital access to 7,000 remote communities across Nigeria. The pilot community of over 12,000 residents now benefits from 2G/3G/4G services, free public Wi-Fi, digital healthcare, and remote learning capabilities.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, commended the collaboration between Globacom and Huawei, emphasizing President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to solving the connectivity crisis that affects over 20 million Nigerians who still lack basic telecommunications access.
“In many communities, if you bring out your phone, there is no network at all,” Dr. Tijani noted. “This is costing the country significantly — people can’t access financial services, medical care, or education. Where you live should not determine your access to opportunity. We are using innovation to ensure every Nigerian, regardless of location, can thrive in the digital age.”
Mr. Sanjib Roy, Group Chief Technical Director of Globacom, explained the company’s role in powering the site with Microwave backhaul connectivity, access to Glo’s core network, and ongoing operational management to ensure uninterrupted voice and data services.
He highlighted key components of the initiative, including:
- Smart Education facilities that connect rural students with remote teachers in Abuja or other cities.
- Telemedicine equipment enabling consultations between local patients and urban-based medical specialists.
- Solar-powered infrastructure for clean energy and uninterrupted service delivery.
During the inauguration, the system’s capabilities were demonstrated as Chief Abubakar Bamaiyi, community leader of Isuanin Kura, held a live consultation with a doctor in Abuja, while students received an online lesson from a teacher in Lagos, showcasing the project’s impact on health and education.
Mr. Kazeem Kaka, Globacom’s Head of Division, North West, emphasized Glo’s unwavering mission:
“Since 2003, Globacom has led the charge to democratize access to communication. Today’s launch continues that legacy—bringing vital services to underserved Nigerians and transforming lives through education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.”
On Huawei’s part, Mr. Terrens Wu, Managing Director of Huawei Nigerian Enterprises, reaffirmed the tech giant’s commitment to empowering rural communities with digital tools. As part of the launch, 120 affordable smartphones were donated to community members to enable them to connect instantly.
The success of the Isuanin Kura pilot project marks a bold step forward in Nigeria’s Digital Inclusion Agenda, illuminating a path of promise, progress, and empowerment for millions still waiting to be connected.
