The atmosphere was charged with excitement and admiration as dignitaries gathered in Abuja last weekend to celebrate Ntufam Hilliard Eta’s appointment as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Eta’s appointment, announced by the Presidency last week, has been described as a “round peg in a round hole” by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other stakeholders. The former Acting National Chairman of the APC and National Vice Chairman South-South during Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s tenure was lauded for his contributions to the party and the nation, making him a fitting choice for the role.

During the occasion, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla highlighted the need to reform the NYSC to reflect the evolving realities of Nigeria. Established over five decades ago, the scheme has successfully fostered unity and national integration. However, Obono-Obla emphasized the urgency of addressing contemporary issues like insecurity, youth unemployment, and the need for national resilience.
He proposed a transformation of the NYSC into a two-year military service program, which he argued would equip participants with skills necessary for national defence and instil discipline, patriotism, and civic responsibility among Nigerian youths. According to him, this bold reform could reduce youth restiveness and channel their energies into nation-building efforts.
“We need bold and innovative reforms to ensure the NYSC continues to serve as a vital tool for national unity, security, and development,” Obono-Obla stated, urging policymakers to take decisive action.
Youth Leader Advocates for Corps Members’ Welfare
A National Youth Leader in attendance underscored the importance of prioritizing the welfare of Corps members. He called on Eta and the NYSC Governing Board to ensure Corps members receive the national minimum wage and other benefits that could positively impact their lives.
“Corps members are the leaders of tomorrow, and their welfare should reflect their critical role in nation-building,” the Youth Leader remarked, emphasizing the need for policies that safeguard their economic and social well-being.

In his response, Ntufam Hilliard Eta expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in this capacity. He pledged to utilize his vast experience in administration to enhance the performance and relevance of the NYSC.
