The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new guideline limiting official school graduation ceremonies to students in Primary 6, JSS3 (Junior Secondary School final class), and SS3 (Senior Secondary School final class). The policy is aimed at standardising academic progression events and reducing unnecessary gatherings across all educational levels.
Under the directive, celebratory graduations for other classes outside of these transition points will no longer be officially recognised in schools. The government says the move is intended to help schools focus on milestone achievements that align with major academic transitions:
• Primary 6 – culmination of primary education
• JSS3 – end of junior secondary school
• SS3 – final year and graduation to higher education or workforce
Education stakeholders have reacted with a mix of support and concern, as some believe the step will help streamline resources and underscore the significance of key academic milestones, while others argue it may reduce morale for younger students who value recognition and encouragement.
The Federal Ministry of Education says the policy will be implemented in schools nationwide and encourages schools to embrace alternative forms of motivation and academic support for pupils in other classes.
