President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed former Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Umaru Al-Makura, as the new Chairman of the Board of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The official announcement was made on Tuesday, June 10, during the launch of a university ICT development initiative held in Abuja. Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, who presided over the event, unveiled Al-Makura’s appointment as part of broader reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s basic education sector.
A veteran politician and seasoned entrepreneur, Al-Makura brings decades of leadership and business acumen to UBEC. He governed Nasarawa State from 2011 to 2019 under the platform of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC)—notably emerging as the only CPC governor elected nationwide during the 2011 general elections. Following his governorship, he served as the Senator representing Nasarawa South from 2019 to 2023.
Beyond politics, Al-Makura is renowned for his success in agriculture and industrial machinery, real estate, and hospitality, establishing himself as a key player in Nigeria’s private sector.
As the newly appointed UBEC Board Chairman, he will play a crucial role in steering policy direction, offering strategic oversight, and working closely with the Commission’s executive management. His responsibilities include advising the federal government on funding, engaging state and local governments on implementation matters, and ensuring national standards are upheld across Nigeria’s basic education system.
Al-Makura succeeds Idris Olorunnimbe, who previously held the position following his appointment in March 2025.
