In a rare show of bipartisan praise, Hon. Alex Mascot, a federal lawmaker from the opposition All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has described the two-year tenure of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, of the Labour Party, as “revolutionary” and “magical.”
The commendation came during a televised interview on AIT’s flagship programme Jigsaw, where Hon. Mascot, who represents Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency, delivered a midterm assessment of governance across Nigeria.
“There are roads that were bad in Abia before I was born—roads abandoned since the 70s. In just two years, Dr. Alex Otti has done magic,” he declared.
🔧 Historic Infrastructure Turnaround
The lawmaker highlighted the rehabilitation of key commercial arteries such as the Aba-Cameroon road corridor, previously impassable and economically debilitating for traders in the commercial hub. “Businesses once forced to reroute through Arochukwu and Akwa Ibom can now thrive again,” he said.
Mascot also praised the transformation of the iconic Ariaria Market, historically plagued by flooding. “There’s now a seven-storey structure with working elevators in Ariaria—an area we once accessed by canoe during the rainy season,” he recounted, stunned by the radical shift.
🏥 Healthcare, Governance & Technocratic Leadership
Beyond infrastructure, the APGA lawmaker commended the Otti administration’s improvements in the healthcare sector. “Hospitals used to be dark, with unpaid and demoralized staff. Today, the difference is visible and encouraging.”
Mascot attributed this success to Governor Otti’s technocratic leadership, citing his background with First Bank and Diamond Bank. “He’s brought rare competence into governance—something Nigerian politics has long lacked,” he stated.
🔁 Cross-Party Support & Contagious Competence
Interestingly, Mascot revealed that even APC leaders privately express admiration for Otti’s achievements. “The Deputy Speaker, some APC senators… they admit he has delivered exceptionally well,” he said.
He also hinted at a possible defection to the Labour Party if internal disputes are resolved, stating:
“It will be totally preposterous for anyone in Abia not to show support—directly or indirectly.”
🌍 Economic Revival with Continental Impact
Mascot observed that the revived infrastructure has rekindled confidence among international traders, potentially affecting broader economic activities across Nigeria’s Southeast and South-South zones.
“Aba is about to announce itself to the world again,” he added, signaling the commercial city’s resurgence as a major trade center in West Africa.
Governor Alex Otti’s performance in Abia State appears to be more than political—it is transformational. With voices across party lines aligning to commend his strides, the governor may be setting a new gold standard for leadership in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
